Sources: Pierce Charles undergoing Man City medical after deal agreed
Pierce Charles is currently undergoing a medical ahead of a permanent move to Manchester City, sources have told Football Insider.
Man City reached an agreement with Sheffield Wednesday over the 20-year-old, who has now been allowed to travel to Manchester to complete the move.
The Northern Ireland international goalkeeper enjoyed a strong season for Wednesday despite what was a year packed with controversy and turmoil at Hillsbrough.
Man City are among a number of clubs who had been keeping tabs on Charles' progress at the League One club, and have now moved quickly to reach an agreement.
He is seen as a bright prospect for the future, with City keen on his development, and they regard his signing as a major coup.
The goalkeeper has just one year remaining on his contract at Sheffield Wednesday, and following their relegation from the Championship, the decision was made to let him move on.
Why are Man City pushing to sign Pierce Charles?
Charles has emeerged as one of the brightest young goalkeeping prospects in the EFL in recent years, having already made 36 senior appearanes for the Owls.
The goalkeeper started his academy career at the Etihad, before making the switch to Hillsbrough in 2021, and is now set to return to his boyhood club.
That connection placed City as the firm front-runners in their pursuit, and scouts have been keeping tabs on his development since he was allowed to leave the academy.
A similar decision was made with James Trafford, who progressed through the ranks at Man City before moving on, and was brought back in last summer's transfer window.
Charles' performances for Sheffield Wednesday last season cemented his status as an exciting prospect, and Man City view him as one for the future.
However, as he will remain behind Trafford and Gianluigi Donnarumma in the pecking order, it remains to be seen what the club's current plans are for the 20-year-old.
Which other clubs were interested in Charles?
Despite now closing in on completing the singing of Charles, Man City were far from the only club interested in luring him away from Sheffiled Wednesday this summer
A number of top clubs across England, Scotland and the rest of Europe were keeping a close eye on his situation before Man City swooped.
Football Insider shared reports in April that Rangers were keen to sign Charles and had been keeping a close eye on his performances in the Championship.
That came as the Ibrox club looked to revamp their goalkeeping options, with concerns about Jack Butland ultimately leading the club to let him move on.
However, Man City quickly moved to the front of the queue for Charles, while Rangers completed the signing of Hull City goalkeeper Ivor Pandur last week.
