Leeds United are set to engage in fresh contract talks with Brenden Aaronson once he returns from the World Cup, sources have told Football Insider.

The Whites view a new deal for the attacking midfielder as a key "priority" this summer, as he is now into the final year of his current contract.

The West Yorkshire outfit are hoping to sit down with the player and his camp and reach a fresh agreement by Christmas at the latest.

Sources have indicated that if they cannot achieve that, then they will look to take their final chance to cash in on the 25-year-old in the January window.

The USA were knocked out of the World Cup when they were beaten by Belgium on Tuesday, meaning Leeds' chance to negotiate with Aaronson is now just around the corner.

The former Red Bull Salzburg man notched four goals and five assists in the Premier League last term, and played a big role in the team surviving relegation.

Leeds want Brenden Aaronson extension after transformative season

Aaronson has found it difficult to establish himself since his move to Elland Road back in 2022, with fans regularly frustrated with his displays.

However, he enjoyed a hugely progressive campaign last time out, which helped to win over many of his critics at Leeds.

Aaronson was regularly handed creative responsibility behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and he rewarded Daniel Farke with some key goals throughout the campaign.

His tally of nine goal involvements represented a much higher total than his last season at the top level of English football back in 2022-23.

Farke has relied on the American heavily in the last 12 months for his energy and creativity, and he doesn't want to lose that any time soon.

Leeds are hoping to kick on and consolidate their spot in the top flight even further this term, but Aaronson is still expected to be an important piece of the puzzle.

Leeds tipped to agree Orjan Nyland deal after scouting mission

Leeds tipped to move for World Cup goalkeeper

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on Monday that he would be "very surprised" if Leeds don't have Noway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland on their radar this summer.

The ex-recruitment man made it clear that the Whites have had scouts watching the action out in North America, where he believes the 35-year-old has enjoyed an "outstanding tournament" so far.

Nyland is currently a free agent after his contract with Sevilla expired at the end of last season.

Leeds are in the market for a new number one this summer, and Brown believes that a move for the former Aston Villa man will be firmly on their radar.
